I just got a tattoo on my left foot of flowers and a tribal. Anyone who’s spent time around me knows that I wear my love of winter on my arm. Not my sleeve, mind you, my arm. After all, sleeves can be taken off and put back on. This, however, is no mere article of clothing - it’s more like a tattoo I’ve worn proudly and publicly since I was a kid. As I approach the half-century mark - T-minus thirteen months and counting - the snow-bug shows no sign of releasing it’s bite, and I don’t mind one little bit.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of a perfectly arced ski turn at high-speed. It’s a sensation that peels back the layers of the day-to-day to reveal and tap into the very essence of my being. At some level, the ego drops away and, in the cold air and clear, bright sunlight of the season, skiing becomes a spiritual pursuit. As with so many experiences that others would perhaps term “transcendent,” it’s a feeling that words can’t hope to describe, that the mind can’t quite wrap itself around, and the body, in all it’s wisdom, never, ever forgets…

Lest I wander too far afield of my story, let me say that snowy spiritual quests are not what I really intended to tell you about this month, so back on track I go…

Though the best of winter took it’s own sweet time arriving, I’ve managed to get in a number of good days of skiing so far, some alone, some with friends, with my Dad, and several with my son, Cai.

I’ve been impressed with Cai’s progress and his ability to learn. Over the holiday week, I watched him improve - quite literally - with every run. While he gets a bit nervous on steeper trails or where exposure is involved, on the gentler terrain he really enjoys, he looks great!

I see what I would consider “healthy fear” at work in the places he’s less comfortable. The more relaxed he gets and the more fun he has, the more likely he is to challenge himself without my input, so I’m not worried. (Exposure, for the uninitiated, is the experience of being someplace where one is open - exposed - to long drops and/or a great distance. Typically, skiers new to exposure fear that if they allow themselves to let go of the side of the mountain, they will fall all the way to the horizon.)

All this may sound incredibly obvious, and parts of it have been hard lessons to learn.

In years past, I dragged Cai down a few trails he wasn’t that interested in, and it wasn’t a whole lot of fun for either one of us.

Make no mistake; it was much tougher on him… After all, I was only inconvenienced while he was, in his efforts to please me, terrorized.

My plan for this year was to give him more say in running our ski days: choosing trails, when to stop for lunch, that sort of thing.

One day several weeks ago, we were on the hill having a grand old time - or so I thought. Cai said that he wanted to follow me, and much to my surprise he was right on my tails for most of the afternoon. Every time I turned around, there he was, keeping pace and matching me, as best I could tell, turn for turn. I was astounded! How had he gotten that fast in such a short amount of time? What was he putting in his oatmeal when my back was turned..?

For our last run of the day, I wanted to watch him from behind to get a better idea of what he was up to. I said, “You go ahead. I’ll follow you down this time so I can watch you.” Off he went.

He made a few turns, gradually decreasing the arc of each one, until he was all but straight-lining. I pushed on as fast as I could to catch up and tell him to slow down. I never got to deliver my message…

When I had drawn to within about 20 yards of him, Cai went buns-over-tea-kettle, losing his skis and one pole in the process. By the time I gathered up his gear and reached him, he was laying in a snowy heap on the ground, doing that variety of crying that keeps parents guessing when the first inhalation is going to come.

He gradually got to his feet, clearly rattled, every available open space between his helmet and goggles, not to mention his neck, ears, and the cuffs of his jacket, packed with snow. As I was clearing the snow from his helmet and gloves and opening his bindings, he slowly began to regain his composure.

“Wow, Cai,” I said, kneeling in front of him and keeping an eye out for on-coming skiers, “you were going really fast. I think you were out of control…”

He looked back at me through teary, reddened eyes and said, “I’ve… been… out… of… control… all… day… trying to keep… up… with… you!”

Enlightenment comes in strange, small packages at times. And as I, the former racer, racing coach and ski instructor, knelt in front of my weeping, snow-packed kid in the flat light of a late Saturday afternoon, it occurred to me that I had been basking in delusion every time I looked over my shoulder earlier in the day. Cai wasn’t keeping up with me because he wanted to; he was keeping up with me because he thought it was what he was supposed to.

While I told him how well he was doing over and over again, I didn’t think to ask him how he was feeling or how he thought he was doing…

After putting Cai back together, we rested for a moment. I apologized for not being more curious about what was actually going on, and he thanked me. Then we made an agreement: We would both slow down and pay more attention to what we were doing… and to one another.

With the exception of one run last week when I led Cai down a twisty, double fall-line trail he deemed too uncomfortably odd and scary, we’ve kept our word to one another.

We’ve had several days on the hill since that last crash, and an odd thing has happened: He’s gotten faster again, only now he’s skiing in control, and smiling at the bottom of each run. On the way up the lift

I ask him, “How are you doing?”

“Good,” he says, grinning behind his goggles, “I wish these lifts were faster!”

“Me too,” I answer, wishing we could get to the top quickly, just so we have more time to go slow. “Me too…”

Weekend Adventures—A New Trend in Bachelor Parties

Bachelor parties are about guys getting together, sharing old stories, and maybe creating some new ones. They are a chance for the best man to send the groom off in style, in appreciation for years of friendship. Traditionally, this has involved drinking one’s fair share of alcohol, heading off to a gentlemen’s club, and waking up the next morning in a strange place with a new tattoo. Recently, a new trend has emerged. Guys are now spending weekends immersed in outdoor adventures: leaping out of airplanes, roping cattle, reeling in trophy fish, and riding wild whitewater.

Picture it: 10 buddies sitting in a rubber raft, getting tossed back and forth, and paddling like crazy through a menacing drop-off the guides call, “The Meat Grinder.” Besides whitewater rafting, parties can perform airborne ballets after leaping from planes at 10,000 feet, reel in fish ranging from 30 lb king salmon to 300 lb sharks, or drive hundreds of cattle alongside real-life cowboys. As an added bonus, guys return from the adventure, with pictures, mementoes, and memories that will always remain special.

Although these adventures bring a fresh, new idea to the bachelor party concept, groups are given many opportunities to do some old-school partying. Typically, the extreme adventure locations are located off the beaten path, requiring a couple-days excursion. Everyone usually congregates in a major city near the adventure site and spends the first night enjoying the urban nightlife. Day Two kicks off with an early morning rise, followed by a trip out into the wild for the adventure activity.

Some detailed examples of adventure-based bachelor parties paint a clear picture of exactly how extreme adventure combines with traditional fun to produce an unforgettable experience.

Whitewater Rafting

Whitewater rafting is an adventure that can take place in multiple locations across the country. As long as there is a flowing river, someone will put a boat in it. The trick is finding the rivers that will take you to the edge, without throwing you over it. Under the guidance of an adventure expert, guys paddle, dodge, and hold on through class IV and V rapids, all while taking in spectacular views of the scenic beauty and wildlife. To compliment the adventure, the group spends the first night at an upscale hotel in a bustling downtown area and the second night in more rustic accommodations surrounded by nature. In groups of four to six people, the guys board separate charter boats and compete in a private fishing tournament. While everybody breathes in the fresh air and takes in picturesque views, the expert captains and crew guide the team to the hot spots and teach the boys how to reel in the big one. After a full day of fishing, camaraderie, and competition, a chef “cooks the catch” at a restaurant overlooking the water. Since most fishing trips are located in beach side towns, nights will be spent at Buffet-like bars sipping Margaritas, watching the fade over the horizon.

Skydiving

What’s better than jumping out of a plane, free-falling for over a minute at 120 mph, and seeing for miles in every direction? Doing it all with some of your closest friends. After some basic training, everyone flies to 13,000 feet and prepares for the jump. Hearts pound, men begin to fade to the back of the line, and adrenaline pumps as everybody peels out of the plane into the open sky. Once everyone has returned safely to Earth, the party begins. The boys enjoy beers in the hanger, a bonfire on the grounds, a delicious catered dinner, and a viewing of the days skydive video. To enhance this exceptional skydiving experience, upscale accommodations, fine dining, and locally distinct nightlife in a lively downtown setting complete the package.

Regardless of the adventure theme you choose, it will be important to make the outing an “experience” rather than just a trip. Answer these questions when planning your weekend to remember:

•What are the best bars?

•How will the group get from the hotel to the adventure outfitter?

•If the adventure is outside of the city, where will the group stay the second night?

These are just some of the questions that will come up as the event planning takes shape. The most important part of the trip is making sure the groom has a great time. So, if you are the best man, make sure to have his best interests in mind at all times. If all goes as planned, you will have successfully orchestrated a weekend filled with memories to last a lifetime and maybe even overcome some fears along the way.

Rose

The roses are charming, but very sophisticated and pretentious flowers too. There are some tricks to prolong the rose’s life:

· It would be good, if it’s any possibility, to be conserved in a cold place, even the fridge, but not near the other products, for a few hours, after bought them.

· Cut the stem at a very sharp angle under the water and than let the water to flow over the stems for 3 minutes.

· Soften the base of the stem into mint oil before put in the vase.

· Add some lemon drops into flower’s water or a little salt.

· Introduce the roses till flower in a tall and full of water vase than leave them in a dark cold place even for 24 hours.

· For bacteria to be destroyed, add a drop of disinfecting substance in flowers water.

· The roses need to stay in tall vases, filled with warm water.

· You have to change the water daily.

Tulip

The tulip’s availability, as a cut flower, is from 8 to 10 days. The tulip doesn’t bear the water privation and the warmth. For a better hydration, you need to cut the white base of the stem under the water and put it in a cold, without draught space, into cold and fresh water. To maintain the water’s freshness and the flower’s natural colors, attach some small branches of Tuia. You can also put a metal coin. To avoid the tulip’s declension, you have to fill the vase with water or to wrap the flower into a paper, because the stem will turn towards the light.

Lily

The punks of the lily have their different opening phase, that the flower lives in water more than 1, maybe 2 weeks. For a long availability, you got to avert the full-blown flower’s stamens, before the pollen will spot the petals, fading them. To prolong the lily’s life, add in the water a spoon of white vinegar (it applies to the gladioluses, anemones too).

Chrysanthemum

The chrysanthemum is one of the most resistant cut flower and it will decorate your house for a long time, more than 2 weeks. By hybridization, the chrysanthemum has a several numbers of petals, multiple colors, forms and sizes. For the best hydration, you’ll smash or cut the stem at a very sharp angle, eliminate the base leafs of the stem. A bouquet of chrysanthemum flowers has to be disposed in a large vase, so the flowers will not be crowded. You need to change frequently the water in the vase and powder the flowers with water, because the chrysanthemum loves the humidity.

Orchid

The orchids will decorate your place for 1 or 2 weeks, maybe more, if you offer them the best conditions. It’s important for you to know that the orchid, being an exotic flower, prefer a 26 degrees temperature. After gathering, the flowers have to be left in a cold space (10-15 degrees) for a couple of hours. Than put them in capacious vases. To refresh the orchids you’ll cut the stem and than put it in a boiled water, so the flowers will resist more. Keep them away from the draught, smoking or hot vapors (this is also a practice for the anthurium cut flower).

Daffodil

The daffodil cut flowers can resist from 4 to 8 days, if they are carefully attended. Their stems excrete a viscous substance which is speeding up the blight process. Therefore you’ll follow this practice: cut the stem at a very sharp angle 2 inches below the end, than pass it through the fire or leave it for a while in warm water, for the pest substance to be eliminated. You can use a combination of vinegar and salt to clean the daffodil’s vase.

Carnation

The carnation is a very resistant flower and is usually used in the arrangements that have no water supply. Some cultures consider the carnation a funeral flower, maybe for its resistance. It’s important for it to be cut between the stem nodules for the best hydration. The carnations love the fresh water and the sweetmeat, thus put some sugar in the water. You can also add some lemon drops.

Daisy

It’s very alike the chrysanthemum, therefore the scientific name is Chrysanthemum leucantheum. Daisy is a resistant cut flower, though it’s fragility. As the best care, cut the stem till the green part, put it in tall vase, filled just for 3 quarts with water and add a drop of whitening substance.

Anemone

Depend of the type of flower, the anemone will resist between 5 and 8 days, maybe more, if it’s well attended. The stem has to be cut at a sharp angle. This flower prefer the cold water and the cold spaces, that you can get them into the fridge, for 1-2 hours, in a separated compartment, before their placement in water. Just like the anemones, the flowers with a fragile stem (freesia, for example), have to be doused till the flower.

Lily-of-the-valley

This flower will not resist more than 4-5 days since the gather and that so under a good care. You have to put it in fresh and not very cold water as soon as you can.

Crocus

The crocus’s cut flower doesn’t resist much time, just 3-4 days. As a bulb root flower, like the tulip, iris, daffodil etc, it loves the cold water, changed every day. The warm water speeds up the flourish. Is good that the white area from the stem’s base to be cut, because only the green part will absorb the water. You’ll get the crocus in small vases filled at 3 quarter with water.

Iris

Dahlia

Peony

The peony will be as fresh as the beginning into the vase from 7 to 10 days. The cut flowers are conserved in a cold place for 24 hours without water and thereafter you’ll cut 1 centimeter from the stem and put them in vases filled of warm water.

Gerbera

The gerberas, as well as the tulip, usually inflect their stem. There are some simple tricks for not to happen: prick the stem just under the flower, to get out the air deterrent the flower hydration or fill of water the empty stem and keep it with the flower turned downward overnight.

Poppy

hopefully someone can help me.I mother was just involved in a very serious accident. she will be ok but it'll be at least a year to recover. When my boss was in an accident his whole family got a matching tattoo to remember the Miracle day he survived, I think its a god idea as well so I might do it. Now… I don't have any tattoos and I can't say I'm very fond of them either but if I wanted to get one what would you recommend? here's what happened. My mother is a mail delivery person and while she was loading the mail in her car, one of the company trucks that was leaving had a stuck gas pedal and hit her and then proceeded to hit 4 parked cars.no one else was injured, just my mom, thank god… I guess! anyway i was thinking maybe an angle holding a bundle of mail and on the letter where it normally says an address I could put the date that it happened. Five Must Have Mechanical Music Collectibles for the Music Box and Antique Collector

Some music box and antique collectors may not realize that there are other forms of mechanical music to collect in addition to inlaid music boxes, musical jewelry boxes, ballerina music boxes, antique cars, antique jewelry, and other collectibles. These include Bird Organs, Barrel Pianos, the Pianola, the Welte-Mignon Orchestrion, and the Racca piano.

The Bird Organ

The bird organ is a small type of barrel organ about 6 inches square. The name comes from a type of barrel organ used to teach canaries how to sing. High pitched pipes which played simple tunes were used to teach a bird how to mimic the tune. Also known as “Serinettes”, there is one collectible in Paris that dates back to 1765. While some of these mechanical collectibles do not play well, they still make interesting items for the music box and antique collector.

Barrel Pianos

For collectors, finding a barrel piano developed by Joseph Hicks is possible. Hicks made an upright pianoforte, which was played with a pinned barrel. These collectibles were seen all over England at one point and a large number were made with handcarts so that they could be played and wheeled in the streets. Finding a barrel piano is not difficult since there are many on the market.

The Welte-Mignon Orchestrion

Invented in 1887 by Emile Welte of the Welte-Mignon company, the Welte-Mignon Orchestrion is a paper roll that can be used with pianos or organs. An expansion of Welte’s invention was orchestrions, which were made to be placed in large homes or assembly rooms. David Tallis stated in “Music Boxes: A Guide for Collector’s”: “A typical Welte orchestrion had forty-four notes which play on eight stops or ranks of pipes with the addition of a percussion section; triangle, snare drum and bass drum. The music played by these instruments is largely operatic, but marches and popular melodies can be found”.

The Pianola

The pianola is a player piano. David Tallis also states the following about the pianola: “Soon after the advent of the paper roll for the mechanical reproduction of music came the invention of the player piano. In 1897, American Mr. E.S. Votey, constructed a contrivance that could be pushed up to the keyboard of an ordinary piano. Felt-covered fingers projected from the front and these played the keys of the piano when activated by a perforated paper roll. This push-up device was improved so that its mechanism became built into the piano to make the piano as we know it today.. . . The best reproducing pianos were made by Welte-Mignon, Amico, Duo-Art, and Steck.”

The Racca Piano

The racca piano is a rare music collectible and not easy to find. It plays from “book music”. Created in 1886 by Giovanni Racca, the racca piano looks like a minature grand piano and had an arrangement as wide as the keyboard so the book music can go through the machine with a controlled memory. This piano had quite a romantic sound.

For the music box and antique collector, there are other interesting mechanical music collectibles that can be sought. While inlaid music boxes, musical jewelry boxes, ballerina music boxes, antique cars, antique jewelry, and other types of collectibles are valuable, discovering some of the other types of mechanical collectibles can be just as fun and rewarding.

Tattoos On Robbie Williams

British singer Robbie Williams has at least 14 tattoos on his body. The count varies according to how you group the tattoos together. Aside from music, body ink has really been one of his passions. He’s got tattoos of different sorts and designs almost covering his whole body.

On his right upper thigh is a Pagan Celtic Cross which was done while he was still part of the pop group Take That. As he described in one of his interviews, he’s got the devil inside him and that cross tattoo is meant to protect him from such inner demons.

Located on his left shoulder is a big Maori tribal design in a partial sleeve from his shoulder to halfway down his biceps. The design is exquisitely detailed with rounded waves as signs of the twists and turns in life. One of the sources says that the Maori tribal tattoo was done by a famous Dutch tattoo artist, Henk Schiffmacher, while another source says that it was done by Te Ranginu Netana in New Zealand. The Maori tattoo is thought to represent Williams’ life.

Williams’ right arm is designed with a face of a lion with inscriptions above and below it. The tattoo is a representation of a young male lion, the universally accepted sign of power, with detailed features. “Elvis, grant me serenity”, are the words inscribed above it, while “Born to be mild”, are found underneath. Just like the cross, the lion tattoo is also for protection.

Another tattoo found in Robbie Williams’ body is the Eye of Horus, the ancient Egyptian falcon god, also called the “all-seeing eye”. Williams had this tattoo done at the back of his neck in 2004 as a shield from evil spirits and for good luck.

Also believed for protection is what Robbie calls the “Christian.” It was done in New Zealand in July 2000. The “Christian” is a depiction of the crucifixion - Jesus Christ on the cross with Mary and some angels.

In May 2003, Robbie had a pair of swallows tattooed on his abdomen. These tattoos are a symbol for freedom and loyalty and probably an expression of Williams’ love for these abstract concepts.

Under his left arm, Robbie Williams has a Crest tattoo, a tattoo of the coat of arms of the town of Burslem. Burslem is known as the Mother Town, and one of the six towns that form the current city of Stroke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, in the Midlands of England. It is the plac

On Robbie’s lower back is the musical score for the chorus of the well-known Beatles classic, “All You Need Is Love.”

I have a small heart shaped cut I made on the inside of my thigh which I've had for a few months now and have been trying to get scar. It's not very deep and I've just had to redo it. I was thinking about letting it heal up and get it tattooed over in June when I turn 18.

I was just wondering if it would heal up enough to be tattooed over by then? I want the same thing in the same place just filled in and with a bit more detail around the outside. Would I be able to get it tattooed over?

The other option I was thinking about was to try and get the heart to scar and then tattoo the other thigh in the same place, but would that look a bit odd with a heart on both legs?

Also I'm a little bit podgey. If I were to gradually lose a stone or so would it drastically affect the tattoo?

I'm can't get it for a few months yet but I wanted to start thinking about it now so I can be sure thats what I want. Any opinions?
